The New Fine Art
Foundation Course.

Full Course Description

The course is made up of three terms, during which students will be working experimentally, developmentally and independently.
The structure of the course progresses from set assignments towards self-directed study. The course is full time, and during Term 1 the generic weekly structure includes:
• One day of observational drawing
• One day of gallery drawing
• Two days for set project work
• One day of independent study
Lectures are normally timetabled for Friday mornings. Students are expected to engage with timetabled studio critiques and debates throughout the programme.
The emphasis during Terms 2 and 3 is more focused on independent study but students are also expected to attend all timetabled drawing classes and other activities.
TERM ONE
Weeks 1 - 6
During weeks 1-6, students will be introduced to a range of fine art processes and materials. Feedback sessions and reviews will offer a platform for discussion and further development.
All students will be required to keep a journal to document the thoughts and processes involved in the making of work, along with notes from gallery visits, lectures and hand- outs. This journal becomes an indispensable point of reference as the course progresses.
Week six concludes with a tutorial assessment and feedback on progress and advice on UCAS applications and other opportunities to progress.
Weeks 7 - 12
The next six weeks focus on individual and tutor led projects. Contextualisation of traditional and current fine art practice will underpin the progression of the work made. Students will be questioned and challenged via group presentations. The journal will continue to support and document learning, whilst demonstrating commitment and motivation towards the realisation of students’ ideas.
Concurrent with set projects, students will be expected to initiate and manage a self-directed project, either in sketchbooks, working drawings or models.

During this part of the course, students planning to study at BA level will be preparing portfolios for applications. Tutorial advice and guidance on progression routes will be given in one-to-one tutorials to all students and there will be group portfolio preparation workshops.
Term 1 Assessment will occur during weeks 11 and 12. All students are expected to pass this Assessment in order to progress to Term 2.
TERM TWO
Weeks 13 - 15
Term 2 will begin with a week’s intensive drawing, following which students will be expected to outline an individual project of their own. During this period, students will be engaged in portfolio reviews and advice from tutors on their application to BA courses and other chosen progression routes.
Weeks 16 - 22
Work made during this period will explore further independent study. Students will be expected to outline a project proposal, which will act as guideline for the further development of their ideas.
Workshops, where students will be encouraged to explore more in-depth analysis of methods and materials will be timetabled.
Student presentations and peer led group discussion will help prepare students for study at degree level and interview. Drawing will continue to be timetabled and full attendance will be expected in order to fulfill the course requirements.
During this period it is expected that students applying to BA courses will be attending interviews and portfolio submissions.
Term 2 Assessment will occur during weeks 17 and 18. All students are expected to pass this in order to progress to Term 3.
TERM THREE
Weeks 23 - 30
For the final assessment and end of year exhibition, students will be expected to initiate and manage a single ambitious project, which is able to demonstrate an understanding of the intellectual, critical, practical skills and methodologies of fine art practice.
This project will form the final assessment and end of year exhibition.
TUTORIAL STRUCTURE
The teaching structure operates in two ways. The first is group teaching, whereby the tutor is assigned a group of students to deliver a set project, seminar, lecture or discussion. The second is one-to-one teaching. Each student will be allocated a personal tutor at the outset of the academic year and will be required to have one formal tutorial each term.
